Beautiful Garden Bouquets With Mrs. Burns' Lemon Basil

When I began researching great fillers for my cutting garden bouquets I went to one of my all time favorite resources, Floret Flowers. Erin shares her vast amount of knowledge on growing flowers and of course stunning photos of  them as well.  I was immediately taken with her recommendation for incorporating Mrs. Burns' Lemon Basil into flower bouquets.

This was my first season growing Mrs. Burns' Lemon Basil and believe me I will always have this darling of the garden in my list of must have plants.

Not only do I love it so do many pollinators!

So many bees and beautiful swallowtail and monarch butterflies are enjoying this aromatic plant.

Description of Mrs. Burns' Lemon Basil 

  • Bright Chartreuse foliage
  • Fragrant White flowers
  • Lemon Scent 
  • Height 20-24 inches

USDA Plant Hardiness Map

Basil is usually a quick crop and I typically direct sow 90 % of my garden directly after all danger of frost is gone. For your particular planting zone it is wise to always check your first and last frost date, which can easily found on the USDA Plant Hardiness Map. However, these really are estimates and with our climate changing I keep an extra packet of seeds on hand in the event replanting is necessary.

How to Grow Mrs. Burns' Lemon Basil

  • Optimum soil temperature for direct sowing is between 65 and 70 degrees
  • Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep
  • 2-3 seeds per inch
  • Rows 18 inches apart
  • Pat soil down over the seeds
  • Thinning is not necessary
  • Final spacing of 4-8 inches helps to produce full plants
  • Germination 5-10 days
  • Keep moist for optimum germination
  • Full Sun

    Hello dear Jemma! You had me at the title. Basil is my absolutely favorite herb for not just summer time meals but ANYTIME. I hope it's good for the health because I eat it in handfuls, almost daily. And to boot, a lemon scent? YES PLEASE!

    Jemma, I love your new blog design. The red checkered side bars and the cheerful sunflowers, Your bouquet of flowers is beautiful, and I love that vase you put them in.
    It's so unique. I bet it's a pleasant surprise to see the butterflies land on the basil plant.
    Jess always seems to have a basil plant outside as well, as she often uses this herb
    in cooking. That's creative that you used the lemon basil in your flower bouquet.

    I hope the August days bring you much goodness, dear Jemma. How did it get to
    be August already? My favorite season is coming, and I'm waiting patiently. ; )
