Inspirational Thursday-Fall Memories

October 16, 2013

It seems as though it was just a few years ago that I was anxiously

anticipating Halloween as a child. Time has slipped by very quickly

and as I was setting up our cheery little Halloween display memories

of a very special Halloween season flooded through me.

When you are eight years old and have big plans to harvest

pumpkins when you get home from school, the long ride on an old

yellow school bus on a dusty, bumpy dirt road can seem like an

eternity.

Remembering the joy I felt when the school bus finally arrived to

our little red brick house, where love and pumpkins grew! Leaping

down the bus steps with all of my might and being so thrilled to see

that my Mother had the best cardboard skeleton from Woolworths

hanging on our front door.

Life just didn't get any better than that, except for the pumpkin crop

that year. Halloween just isn't Halloween without pumpkins and the

bumper crop of pumpkins that we had that year made me so proud.

We watched over those pumpkins as if they were babies.  There

had been several nights that they had to be covered with old quilts to

protect them from a light freeze.

Then the time came, they had turned a beautiful orange and were

ready to harvest.  We had so many pumpkins that Momma drove

the car around to our little pumpkin patch. Fifty or more pumpkins

were picked and loaded into the trunk of Momma's car.

The sweet smell of country air, a full moon, the sound of a flock of

geese, pure excitement of taking our precious load of pumpkins to

town to sell to our little local market is a vivid, happy and beautiful

memory for me.

Wishing you a week with memories which bring you joy, peace,

laughter and perhaps a smile...

  1. I love this, Jemma. It sounds like a story that would accompany a Norman Rockwell image. What sweet memories you have. One of my fondest memories is when my oldest was in kindergarten. They had planted a seed in a plastic cup and watched as a little sprout popped up. She brought it home and we planted it near our flowers never dreaming it would ever become pumpkins. It grew and spread and uprooted flowers and in October we had three large pumpkins. The picture of her proud face and her one year old sister's glee comes out every October to relive this fun time. Love special memories from childhood! Thanks for sharing.

  2. These are special memories indeed. I can relate to it very well having also grown up in the country. Back when the geese actually flew south, and to hear their honking overhead was the good-bye call of summer. I can picture your memories as clearly as if they were my own. Wendy x

  4. Hi Jemma, so nice to meet you on your blog. And thank you so much for the heartfelt comment. Blogging is a journey, and it's wonderful to be able to stop and take a look back at the path we have tread.

I took a peek at your Pinterest site, and am following some of your boards...thought you might like to know.

  5. I loved Halloween as a child too! I couldn't decide if my favorite holiday was Halloween or Christmas, that's how much I loved it. I would have nightmares that I missed trick-or-treating, that I would go to bed on Oct 30 and wake up Nov 1st. Your post made me think of my love for Halloween as a child. Thanks!

  8. "Memory is a way of holding onto things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose." ~ From The Wonder Years I have never heard that quote before it's excellent. I suppose the reverse is true as well. If you don't have a memory of the past - you probably want to lose it.

I'm digressing - I love your memories of your past and I love your Halloween/Fall decorations - first class!
