How To Cook Fresh Garden Peas

May 13, 2016
I just love fresh veggies, especially when they are served straight from the garden to the

table and that is what we were treated to this last week when I picked our first crop of

Garden peas.

Cooking fresh peas, is well easy peasy.

The true key is not to over cook them.

I grew up on fresh garden peas and I have many, many sweet memories of shelling them

under the Ash Tree in our backyard with my Mom and Grandma.

Mom would often times give me a little gentle scolding, if you can call it that, for eating too

many of them while I was shelling them!

You know fresh garden peas are truly the tastiest straight from the shell.

We would gather our frayed blue and white webbed lawn chairs around in a circle and

many times we drank a good old fashioned coke-cola while we chatted, shelled and

sometimes swatted pesky flies.

Grandma always wore floral dresses that were mid-calf, thick stockings and dark black

shoes.

Sometimes I forget that, but I didn't this year when I was picking and shelling my garden

peas.

I am discovering all sorts of things about myself while I garden and one of them is that

I feel like I am turning back time.

Now, how about that...maybe I have found the fountain of youth!

Leaving you on this fine Friday with a little Wit and Wisdom!

If a girl finds nine peas in a pod, the next bachelor she meets will become her husband!

  1. Your garden looks like it's thriving! I guess the Texas climate agrees with them.

I'm not sure I'd have the patience to shell peas, but I think if I were doing it with someone that would make the experience far more pleasant and the stuff memories, like yours, are made of.

  2. My mom never grew vegetables, but I do remember shelling store bought ones! Looking back, I think it was her sneaky way of getting us kids to eat more veggies... Now I feel a little sad that I never did this with my own kids.

  3. I loved shelling peas with my Mamaw, Jemma. And I love how your posts are taking me back to that happy time. Peas are probably my favorite green veggie- if they are cooked correctly. Like you said- tender crisp! Hope you have a great weekend! X, T.

  4. Jemma, I just had peas last night, and you're right, the trick is not overcooking them. :) Just look at that garden of yours, it's wonderful! I loved hearing about your childhood shelling the garden peas with your mom and grandma. I can just see you nibbling on a few of them along the way. Your aqua shoes are delightful. It's so nice that you have fresh garden peas to cook for dinner.

A happy weekend to you, Jemma. My birthday is on Sunday, yaaay.

  5. It's been decades since I've eaten peas straight from the garden but it's a wonderful food memory. Just butter, salt and pepper were all that was needed. Delish! I do use butter lettuce to cook frozen tiny peas with and it's not bad but can't compare to your dish of just picked peas.

My grandmother dressed just like yours!

  7. I love this post - it takes me back to a simpler time. Growing up in the city, this is not a memory I have, but I can live vicariously through you. My peas have just started to come up in the garden...and the critters have dug a bunch out that I will need to replant. Your garden looks great - I hope you will share more photos!

  9. Good morning Jemma!

I have never, ever eaten fresh garden peas. I have only HAD TO eat them from the can as a child, and maybe only twice, as part of a school lunch. I have to admit that I hated them, but Ruben assures me that the garden variety are fabulous, and I trust him and YOU! I just don't have an opportunity to eat them let alone shell them....but I love the sentiment here, to gather and prepare food EN FAMILLE as we say in French. Any food is always better prepared with family, with a pinch of love.

  10. Delightful post. I share those memories too, helping my mom and grands shell peas. At the time I thought it was terrible, now looking back it was quality time. I still love to cook and serve peas to my family but I don't shell them, I buy them already shelled. Love your pretty garden pics Jemma. Happy Saturday……..

  11. Lovely post that made me feel nostalgic. My grandmother lived in Miami, FL & would go pick fresh peas ( & other things) in the u-pick fields there. She shelled mountains of them & occasionally I would help, although I was very young. I remember there were so many varieties & they were so yummy.

  14. Love this post...when we used to go see Bruce's grandmother, we'd sit on the front porch and shell purple hull peas. How fun to sit and talk while shelling. Someday I hope to have grandchildren who'll shell peas with me!
