DIY Stained Cedar Planter For Outdoor Décor

July 01, 2013
Loving gardening as I do, I always have a little wish of plants and garden décor.
Cedar Planters have been
on this wish list for a just a bit. You can
imagine how thrilled I was to come home and have two DIY Cedar Planters waiting for me to paint and stain!

This is such a wonderful project that I just had to share it with you!
I'd really like to be able to provide you all with more information and details.

But having not been home when these were being made, I had to really pry the information from my husband on all of the details.

How to Make a Cedar Planter

  • Measure and cut the cedar planks to resemble a picket fence.
  • Planters can be made in any size.
  • Using a nail gun or a hammer and nails attach the cut pieces together.
  • Insert desired size of plastic flower pot into the base created.
  • Attach wooden dowel.
  • Add decorative molding.

How To Weather Cedar

  • Apply a very light coat of white paint.
  • Allow paint to dry
  • Rub stain of choice (I used Jacobean)over the top of the painted cedar planters.

I was torn between planting a trailing vine

or compact flowers.  I chose Pentas and

I still think I will add a vine, maybe ivy.

Because of their size, they seem a bit

bare to me.

  2. Hi Jemma,

Beautiful planters filled with pretty petals! Yes, I think the ivy would add some texture. These planters remind me fences, what a bonus that you can move them around! Enjoy them and happy 4th!
