The Importance of Homemaking at any Age

September 03, 2021

I am a lifelong homemaker and I have been blessed to be able to do it for 40 + years!

I am still going strong so I guess I really do love my job!

This is not to say that I haven't had many other "side jobs." I have been a substitute teacher, pre-school teacher, individualized educational advocate, book seller, secretary, Etsy shop owner and a manager.  I have held a plethora of volunteer positions as well. But my main occupation has always been a Homemaker.

Just like any other career path it has and continues to have it's challenges.

For me Homemaking isn't political or  overly complicated.

Home is where real life happens. It is the nitty gritty, get in the trenches sort of lifestyle.

I often times think of the old Motel Six slogan of long ago, "We'll leave the light on for you."

Home and Homemaking is where the light is on 24/7.

The Wizard Of Oz

My all time favorite movie in the entire world is the Wizard of Oz
This cast of characters really got it.
Truly there is no place like home.
Home is the physical embodiment of the folks who live in it.
For most of us, home has taken on a very special meaning over this past year and a half.
We have all spent so much more time at home.
With more time spent at home I think we have all come to realize how vital home and homemaking really are.
Living more mindfully and gratefully for our families, meals, decorating, and warmth of the environment that has sustained us and given us inner peace.

Life for the young homemaker looks somewhat different than that for the mature homemaker.
I have three daughter's who are right in the middle of Homemaking while at the same time embracing their careers.
I really recognize and appreciate them for the young women they have become and their dedication to balancing career and  homemaking.

Why Homemaking is Important- The Young Homemaker

  • Home is the place that every person in society is born into.
  • A new citizen for society is created at home.
  • Real life happens at home.
  • Safe place to fail.
  • Life and survival skills are taught at home.
  • Manners are taught at home.
  • Home is where there is warmth and cheer
  • Home is where there is acceptance.
  • Home is a haven; safety and security.
  • Home is where the heart, soul and mind are nurtured.

As children grow up and the nest becomes smaller our role as a homemaker begins to evolve.
I miss the hurry-scurry days of navigating through drop-offs, after school activities and watching my youngsters sprout into awesome young adults.
So, I thought about how I define homemaking today.

  • It is just as important to an empty nester to make her home a haven  just as it was when she was a young homemaker.

Why Homemaking Is Important-The Mature Homemaker

  • Passing on the love and example of homemaking throughout the generations
  • Welcome folks to come as they are...hungry, tired, grumpy, old, sick, afraid, lost or lonely.
  • Welcome folks to come invited, uninvited or any old way.
  • Prepare and sharing our best recipes for ourselves, our mate, our family or whoever we are with.
  • Home is our sanctuary at any age.
  • Continue to create traditions, meaningful moments and memories for our families and friends.
  • A welcoming and upbeat home never goes out of style.
  • Our souls do not age so the joys of Homemaking remain all throughout our lives.

There is no doubt that homemaking just like any other career can have it's moments or even hours of exhaustion, so I have to put together a little list of how to make Homemaking more enjoyable.

Tips On How To Enjoy Homemaking

  • Take Pride in your Home.
  • Create rituals that bring you joy.
  • Light a scented candle.
  • Treat Homemaking like a job.
  • Listen to music-it truly has the power to reduce anxiety.
  • Set goals.
  • Make your bed daily.
  • Declutter throughout the day.
  • Create deadlines.
  • Focus on one task at a time.
  • Involve your children.
  • Use your best China daily.
  • Use paper plates if it's easier.
  • Don't sweat the small stuff.
  • Decorate the home for the seasons.
  • Splurge on pretties for your home.
  • Set a pretty table for yourself, your mate, your guests.
  • Put on your "best," outfit for dinner at home.
  • Create a comfort zone like none-other.

  4. Good morning sweet friend! I saw late yesterday evening that your new post came up but I wanted to wait until the quiet of the morning to read it because I knew by the title, that it was going to be a post that would not only require my attention cognitively, but emotionally as well. Just yesterday as I was enjoying doing some laundry, cleaning windows and vacuuming, washing floors and putting away pots in the garden, I got another sense of JOY. I got the sense that what I used to admire in my mother when she was the homemaker was now in ME. I have worked all my adult life but as you know, I'm recently retired from teaching (since last June) and I'm just now learning to enjoy these small but important joys of homemaking: making that bed every day and spritzing lavender water on the sheets. When I wash my dishes at the sink below the window that lets in the glorious sunshine, I truly rejoice. But yesterday, I got a sense of my mother's presence (which is so important to me) as well as the memories of admiring the "little old ladies" who lived in a small community in my native California suburb. How I enjoyed their tidy little homes and now, I'm approaching that time of my life (at least in another 15-20 years!) - thank you for this honest and wonderful reminder that home is truly where we belong.
