April 14, 2020
If you have been a friend of At Home With Jemma for awhile, you all know that I enjoy chatting with you all about many, many topics. I so enjoy when you share your experience and thoughts too.
I love sharing crafting, decorating and homemaking but I also love, love my gardens!
These gardens not only bring me joy, they challenge me and they are my therapy and I am struggling right now with all of them covered in snow.
I am a disgruntled gardener.
I am craving garden therapy!!!!
But a girl can dream and I am dreaming of roses!
So today let's dig in and take a look at David Austin Roses for our home and gardening series while we celebrate National Gardening Day too.

While I was researching and writing this post last week we had moderate temperatures and I was itching to get in my gardens, however....you know weather...six inches of new snow!

So, while I won't be able to get in my gardens just yet.
I have plenty of Southern friends who are sprucing, trimming and planting their Summer gardens right now!
So let's chat, tell me what you are up to.

Here is the Real Dirt on Sunlight and Water for Roses.

Where To Plant Roses:

Roses are extremely versatile and hardy plants that can be planted in a variety of positions and locations in the garden. When selecting a planting location, we recommend you consider the following points to ensure the rose thrives:
1. Roses need sunlight!
Roses thrive on direct sunlight.
For best results, a minimum of four hours of direct sunlight is recommended.
However, even when planted against a north wall (meaning no direct sunlight) roses can still perform well.
2. Roses need space!
The closer you plant your rose to other plants, the more competition there is for moisture and sunlight.
For best results, plant your rose 3 feet away from other plants and 2 feet from other roses.
Avoid planting a rose under an overhanging tree branch.

How much water do Roses need?

Watering is arguably the most important aspect of growing any plant.
The right amount of watering will promote a healthy shrub that will flower over a long period.
Watering cans are an excellent way to control the amount of water that you give your roses.

Shrub roses –   1-3 gallons
Climbing roses – 3-6 gallons
Rambling roses – 3-6 gallons
Standard roses – 3-6 gallons
Roses in pots – 1-3 gallons

This all becomes a little tricky as watering varies greatly throughout the year.
So the following are just suggestions.

Fall and Winter:
Water as needed if the ground is completely dry until the rose goes dormant.
Spring:
Watch out for particularly prolonged dry spells.
Newly planted roses – water every two or three days.
Established roses – water once or twice a week as needed to keep the soil moist around your roses.
Summer:
Established roses – water as needed to keep the soil moist around your roses.
As your rose starts blooming, take note if your flowers are wilting. This will happen in extreme heat but is a reliable sign that your roses need more water.
Newly planted roses – water every other day.

  1. Hi Jemma,
Happy New Week. I watched your video on decoupage and it was so fun to see you and hear you. Great and sweet craft to make. Love these roses. I have lots of flower beds in the backyard I am trying to figure out what to plant. These might be something that would look cute around my She Shed. Have a great week. xoxo

  3. Awesome tips and David Austin Rose's are a favorite. I hope to include a few at some point when we get settled. Looks like that could be a few years away. Currently, I'm driving around in Shreveport, it's like a ghost town but hey Target was opened so all is well. Bsck at my desk tomorrow writing and may watercolor paint too. Hugs friend, always enjoy your posts.

  6. How did I not know it was National Gardening Day, and I did a garden post. The roses are fabulous. I have drift roses which have a wonderful fragrance and the climbing Lady Banks. I haven’t had much success with other roses, maybe I will try again. I love this gardening series. Have a good week Jemma!

  7. I have a June birthday, so Roses are my month's flower and I do love them. I planted red "knock out" roses in my retaining wall. So far they are still thriving every summer, although they have to be wrapped in wire enclosures to prevent the deer from eating them--another challenge us Coloradans have to deal with 😉

  8. Oh, roses, roses, and more roses...be still my heart! I really like the soft and pretty color of the yellow ones. Nel just planted roses and they didn't make it, and it surprised me, cause roses are sturdy and can withstand harsh weather. When we planted roses at our old house, they were in direct sunlight, and they bloomed beautifully. I will pass this post on to Nel and maybe she can get some helpful tips. What a delightful apron. I'm sure you can't wait to see all the beautiful flowers in your garden soon, dear Jemma.

  9. Yes!!! I need this garden rose watering schedule... As you know, I am still getting used to Texas' southern summer heat... I've killed more roses as the first year I was told to water only every six days (this was a local plant place!) and thankfully 4 David Austin roses survived and only one died as a result. This was when we were still in the trailer and the roses were all in pots.

I am learning, too, NOT to put gravel in the bottom of pots (from BBC Gardener's World and Monty Don and company) because it raises the water table around plants' roots. Probably how I've killed a bunch of plants here... Well, this fifth year is coming and I am determined not to kill any more. :) All the four roses from the first year are doing well either in the ground or pots and the one that is iffy, I will lift and raise up with more grit and dirt underneath to keep it from getting waterlogged.

Hope you are enjoying your new garden,
    Barb :)
