Five Tips To Refresh A Laundry Room

January 13, 2020
Good Monday Morning! Today's post is a 10 minute read. Are you a person who enjoys folding a fresh load of laundry or maybe even hanging laundry outside on a clothesline to dry. Or are you an individual who crams as many clothes as possible into the washer? Either way, at one point or another we all have to have clean clothes!
Today I am sharing Five Tips on how to refresh any size or style of Laundry Room.

Tip One: Add Open Shelving To Unused Wall Space

1. Fortunately we have a generous amount of space in our current laundry room, unfortunately we did not have any cabinets for storage. The wall above the washer and dryer is long and open and was bare. Dave (my husband) built open shelving to add above the washer dryer, I painted them and presto we have more space to store necessary items and also for me to decorate.

Tip Two: Add A Utility Sink With a Cabinet

2. Our Colorado home is 20 + years old and had not been updated. The utility sink in the Laundry room was without a cabinet and was wobbly, worn and about to fall by the way side. As I mentioned, we had not one single cabinet or shelf in the laundry. A simple fix is to purchase a sink with cabinet at your favorite Home improvement Center and install it.

Tip Three: DIY or Purchase A Beadboard Coat Rack

3. For us and our laundry room we had yet another bare wall so we decided to create an Old fashioned  Mudroom. We designed and made a Beadboard Coat Rack, however if you are not a DIY person there are many stores to purchase them from at reasonable prices.
I have a husband who is handy with a saw and I have the patience to paint raw wood. Once again all of these tips can be modified for any space. In fact, when thinking of Home improvement I encourage you to think outside of the box. Do some rough sketches, and take a few photos prior to embarking on the project.  A little material can go a long way.

Tip Four: Add A bench

4. So, now we have the coat rack , but just think about how nice it would be to have spot to sit and put on shoes, boots or sneakers. We had spent quite a bit of time on updating the laundry room so it was time to move on to our bedroom. Rather than build a bench we purchased the Bradding Natural Stonewash Bench from Pier One and I love it.

Tip Five: Incorporate Baskets For Easy and Stylish Storage

5. I think I can safely say that we all love baskets and with the wide selection and competitive pricing at nearly every Home store there is a basket shape and style for everyone.
I use a large a reinforced basket as our hamper, rectangular baskets for dryer sheets and dust clothes and a French style basket as a clothes basket.

~Thoughts On Homemaking~

*Ironing a collar, washing a dress, making a list, dusting a table, it is the very essence of what makes a house a home.

*It is the meal that is prepared and served on real dishes, on a real table with real conversations, at least once a week.

*Homemakers take the time to shred the chicken, chop the onion, steam the rice and bake the bread. It doesn’t matter if the bread is frozen dough, the chicken is a rotisserie, or if the rice comes in a bag.

*It is the mindset, the intention, the action, the dedication to secure the ship that houses the crew and guides them to shore.

*A homemaker is much like the captain of the ship; steering the boat over rough and rocky seas, to reassure, inspire, calm, and  provide stability.

*There is no one more invested in the ship than the captain and so goes the same for a homemaker.

I hope you found this post helpful and encouraging.

  6. I hate to admit it but I'm the crammer and dry on the line whenever possible. Loosing the laundry room when we went tiny was hard and at times I still miss that room... Love your bench we had one too and it was so handy... Baskets well they just make life better in any room of the home and I also loved having them in laundry room. Great way to hide clutter.. A homemaker, it's an important roll and since the nest emptied I've really, I mean really slacked in this department. Too many changes I guess...

    1. Carole,
I hear you, being an empty nester is challenging and wonderful and oh a mix of this and that. For me laundry has sort of been just laundry, but now that I have more time to dabble, it is nice to have a pleasant place to fold clothes. I sure do wish I had a clothes line though!

  7. Good morning Jemma! I finally made it over to your blog after seeing the notification off my phone from school. I so wish I had a proper laundry room, but in this beautiful home we live in, the basement is where we do our laundry, and it is NOT attractive at all! I think all your suggestions are exactly what I'd do if I had a main level space for this task. So pretty!!!

  8. I would love a mudroom at home. We have one at the lake which is actually the entry to the house and I upgraded a bit last year and maybe this year will try to do more. Just getting it cleaned out was an effort. I love your shelving. And the garland is really cute!

  9. What a great laundry/mudroom!! I am not fortunate enough to have any sort of a mudroom so I had to create one, right inside the kitchen door. It's teeny but I have a boot tray, a basket of slippers, a fold down bench to sit and take my boots off, and a multi hook where I can hang my coat/hat/scarf. It's not pretty but it sure is functional!
