Winter Pound Cake

January 06, 2016
I may have mentioned before that I come from a long line of cake bakers.
My Mother, My Grandmother and My Aunt all made cakes for all of life's many events.
There was the vanilla cake for those who had lost loved ones, chocolate cake for
out of town guests and oh the Lady Baltimore cake or Italian Cream cake for
births and Birthdays.
I can give a personal testimony to the delicacy of these cakes and at one time
the figure to prove their wonderfulness!
No regrets either...smiles...

Seems cakes were just the perfect way to take away the sting, or add to the joy of whatever
Life Event you were going through at the time.
All of this baking was done with the soft hum of the little blue radio, which sat in the corner of the kitchen cabinet, and the whirl of the mixer.

I have shared many cake recipes over the past few years I picked three of them to include in this post because of Spring being just around the corner.

If you make the Valentine Banana Cake, I would personally use the caramel frosting over the Peanut butter.

Fresh Strawberry Poke Cake , Valentine Banana Cake, and Old Fashioned Strawberry Cake.

Conversations were always over a variety of topics and could be one of remembering the dear soul who had departed, or wondering how the new youngster would be fitting in with the family brood.

They were all interesting tales and all of them entailed sharing the hurts and joys of life-
the journey and the fact the good and bad things happen to very good people.
But holding tightly on to your Faith sustains, nourishes and carries you through those sad and difficult times.
There are so many life lessons to be learned in kitchen,
if one is willing to listen and enjoy the process.

Being from a family of cake bakers I tend to bake quite a few cakes.
I am doing my part in carrying on the tradition, and of course I have a penchant for
a good cake- well, maybe any cake.
I think I am of the mindset that I never met a cake I didn't like.

Thank you for stopping by today and I hope you have enjoyed this virtual chat as much as I have.

xoxoxo

  4. Jemma, I am looking at this delicious cake, but mostly my eyes focused on that unique sugar and creamer set. It's very unusual and so pretty with the blue colors. And your yellow tulips must look cheerful in your home with the winter cold weather that we're having. How I love cakes too, and chocolate cake with vanilla frosting is my all-time favorite. :) It sounds like you are enjoying your new space and baking a lot. And it's nice to hear that you all shared stories while spending time in the kitchen and learned many things while doing so. I want to bake a cake now! hehehehe

  6. Looks delicious! I sold my big mixer when I moved here because I didn't think I'd have room for it. I think I need to find a small handheld.

  15. I never met a cake I didn't like! Yours looks delicious. I have such fond memories of going to visit my Granny (great grandmother)- there was always a pound cake and vanilla custard waiting. Thanks for prompting such a sweet memory this morning.

  16. They all sound delicious but the recipe that calls me the most is the pound cake. I love a good pound cake and some lemon makes it all the better!

As a cake person, you'll be happy to know I plan to follow in your footsteps tomorrow. I'm going to Ann Arbor to take a tea cake baking class from the Zingerman's bakery people. We'll leave with three cakes! I'd better plan a tea for Saturday!

  19. Dear Jemma,
You took me right along side of you, whirling the mixer, giggling, listening to that little blue radio. The special cakes for special dates and reasons, yes a memory of a kinder yesteryear.

The Yellow Tulips warmed my heart as this winter for me is all about Tulips as a tribute. I love your charming creamer and sugar bowl and all those glimpses into your most beautiful new home.

The Winter Poundcake recipe I will make, thanks Jemma from the recipe. John and I love it toasted with a smear of sweet cream butter on it with a cup of morning coffee. Your recipe made me smile because the ingredients sound like what a friend of ours puts into his pound cake he makes for gifts. Funny because he would never give out his recipe ... a friend told me its because his recipe is from Southern Home and he likes to take credit for it. Funny!

I'm going to make your recipe this weekend and think of you.
    xoxo,
    Vera

  20. My mom made many cakes, but would always be apologizing for them not rising high enough or not being fluffy enough. I never really noticed, because the taste was always delicious to me. Chocolate cakes with homemade strawberry jam were the birthday cakes for kids, but Dad's favourite was orange cake (and I still bake that for his birthdays, carrying on the tradition). It was nice having a little glimpse into your past ... liked the radio in the kitchen, so ordinary, but so nice ;) I'll try this pound cake for sure Jemma, like having you bake a cake here in my own house!

  29. I have to say I never met a pound cake I didn't like and although I am a chocoholic, I do not like chocolate cake! I must try your pound cake. I just made a Golden Eggnog pound cake with a cranberry pecan filling to use up the eggnog. I put it in the freezer for later so I haven't even tried it yet but boy did it smell good baking! Baking is one of my passions!
