5 Tips For Caring For Fresh Cut Tulips

January 27, 2016
Tulips are one of my very favorite flower and it just seems they have such a merry way
of brightening up spaces during these Winter months.

I especially love vibrant red tulips set against a neutral backdrop, and of course, they are perfect for Valentine's Day.

However, if you are like me, you will have noticed that Tulips have an uncanny way of leaning, drooping, bending and actually becoming quite unbecoming!

I have tied them up, cut them down, leaned them against other flowers, all in an attempt to keep them from drooping.

Yet, they drooped...making me a very unhappy flower girl.

This past week, I found myself craving a bouquet of fresh cut tulips.

Before I purchased these tulips I did a little research on the topic of
caring for fresh cut tulips, and gleaned some tips.

I tried these tips out and they worked!

I have had these tulips for a week and you can see they are standing up straight, seem quite happy and have retained their color.

Here are the 5 tips I used for caring for fresh cut tulips.

5 Tips For Caring For Fresh Cut Tulips

  • Place Tulips in a cool spot out of direct sunlight.

  • Use a narrow or cylinder shape vase.

  • Give the stems a little room in the vase.

  • Use cold water to fill and refill the vase.

  • Fresh water is a must-freshen every 2-3 days.

Thank you for stopping by today, and I hope that you give these tips a try.

I really think the biggest take away would be, keeping tulips out of direct sunlight.

  2. Good morning dearest Jemma! I came home late last night to find a gorgeous bouquet of white roses on my kitchen counter; Ruben had picked them up for me and what a LOVELY surprise. So far all my flowers in the house are doing well.....and tulips are a tough bunch to keep happy, especially during the winter months. I noticed however, my lavender plant that a friend gave me for Christmas. It's been very happy in the kitchen near a window where it does NOT get direct sun but does get a good amount of light. Its been doing very well but lately, the flowers are all bent at a 90degree angle in the same direction! I wonder what they are trying to tell me.....

Your photos look great with that depth of field played out beautifully! Enjoy your day, Anita

  12. Thanks for the tips. I love having fresh tulips in our home. I bought some at Trader Joe's recently that are bulbs growing in a vase of water. I'm keeping them out in the sun room where it is much cooler, but noticed that they are beginning to bloom. I had hoped they would not bloom till February, but looks like it may be this weekend. Will enjoy them regardless. '-)

  20. Oh Yes, red tulips I think are my favorite. That's interesting about using a narrow shaped vase, but it makes sense so they don't flop around. I took a picture of a red flower on my day at the nursery and didn't know it was a tulip until my blog friends mentioned it to me hehehe. It was opened a bit, and when you think of tulips they are firm, standing tall. I always wondered about freshening the water every few days, if that made a difference or not. But I can see that it does. Thanks for the tips, Jemma. They look so pretty on your table. Are you enjoying your new home?

    love, ~Sheri
