Holiday Pumpkin Roll

November 11, 2015
Is there anything quite as welcoming, and inviting as the aroma of cakes, pies and breads

baking in the oven.

Combine that with a crisp chill to the air, glowing candles and a crackling fire.

Add a slice of this Holiday Pumpkin Roll to the equation and you are set just in time

for the Holidays.

It is simple, dependable, and delicious.

All that you have to do is print the recipe, follow the directions and then tuck your

recipe in your recipe file box.

We all have a recipe file box, right?

Or maybe we don't.

Well then-this has me thinking.

That just maybe I need to give these as Christmas gifts to my daughter's.

Do young women have recipe file boxes nowadays...

Do we need a recipe file box giveaway??

We will visit this topic on recipe file boxes a little later in this post.

In the meantime, this is a wonderful, wonderful recipe.

I recommend making it the day before you will be serving it, because it actually is even

tastier spending those 24 hours plus in the fridge.
This recipe all begins with pumpkin puree, not pumpkin filling.

Pumpkin puree is pure without any spices, pumpkin filling has flavor.

Or if you you'd like to make your own puree here is a link to The Pioneer Woman, you

know she knows how to cook.

Did you know that there are many folks who do not like pumpkin pie, oh I know that you

may think that this is not true, but it is.

I am not one of those people, but I like to be able to offer a variety of desserts and it just

seems to me that a pumpkin something is a must for a Thanksgiving dessert.

Not only is this a lovely dessert, it  would be a beautiful holiday gift, great for a potluck

dinner and just between the two of us a breakfast treat with coffee.

This is really all there is to it, just do not overbake it.

This recipe is from Lynda Sanders.

Don't over think this recipe just follow the directions and it will turn out.

Now, tell me do we need a recipe box giveaway?

xoxo

  1. Dearest Jemma,

As a photography enthusiast these days, I am observing more and more photos that I would have never dared to try just a few months ago. FOOD is now a great challenge for me (lack of time and appropriate lighting and space for food), but I have to give it a go. YOU have captured the texture and light beauty of this masterpiece SO WELL! That last shot especially, with the light hitting the very surface of the cake....wow. SPLENDID!

This time of year is wonderful. With my husband being away on business more often these days, I can't get any baking done on the weekends because I don't want to make cake or scones with just ME in the house: DANGEROUS! So, the holidays will be a great time to see if I can get some people to come over for a slice of holiday love.

    ENJOY my friend!

    1. Anita,
Thank you for noticing my photography, I am really working on refining the photos that I take of food, and will the rest of my life, I am certain.
They do present their own challenge, don't they? One wants to capture the light, texture and those glorious nuances of the food itself.
      Thank you so much!!
      Much Love,
      Jemma

  3. This looks and sounds so good!! I would love to try it. Just one question. After taking out of the oven and rolling it in the tea towel.....are you rolling it end to end like you would when it has filling? It doesn't break apart? Several years ago I was laid up in bed with back issues so I took advantage of the time by hand writing recipe books (on blank journals) of all my favorite and best known recipes. I gave them to my young daughters, sisters and girlfriends. To this day they tell me they still use them. A soft cover book can be filed with other cookbooks!

    1. Ann Marie,

I am going to answer this question here, in the event there is a similar question.

As you remove the cake from the pan leave the wax paper or parchment paper on the back of the cake and flip it onto the dusted tea towels. Very carefully remove the paper so not to tear the cake, then immediately roll it from end to end as if you were filling it.
This is why it is critical not to over bake the cake, by not over baking it, the cake remains
      pliable.
Hope this helps, off to email you as well, and thanks for sharing this tip on gifting recipes!

  4. Recipe boxes.... Are they from another era? Well yes, since many of us, probably have a past woman's recipe box. But do women keep them today? Don't know. I don't, but then, I am not the most baking-up-things woman. :-)

Pumpkin Pie. I don't care that much for it. One of my daughter's in law loves them. I always have to make her one, for our Thanksgiving Family Dinner, where ever it is held.

    1. Tessa,
I suppose they are from another era, those interesting recipe boxes-I still have my Mother's!
I love it- with it's well worn tin and handwritten notes.
      You know me by now-sentimental..

I am just beginning to find out that there are many folks who don't care for pumpkin pie, secretly I think that it is the whipped cream that I love the most!

      Happy Wednesday,

  5. Count me as one of the people who do not care for pumpkin pie. I'll eat it, but much rather have almost any other pie, except mince meat. Who invented THAT!?

I will admit this is just about the prettiest recipe I've ever seen, and if it's true that we eat with our eyes, then this would be a big hit at any gathering.

I don't have a recipe box, and I don't remember my mother having one either, but she wasn't really into cooking. My grandmother was, but she never used recipes. Just a 'pinch of this, a dash of that' lol.

    1. Doreen,

I know who did invent mince meat pie...hum...

I suspect that it is the texture of the pumpkin pie that is thwarting it's popularity, is that true?
Suppose that is why I load mine down with fresh whipped cream!

  6. Your post made me smile, Jemma, as I was just talking about when we make yummy dishes and take pictures of it. It's hard for me to do because I just want to eat the food that I've prepared. : ) But you are patient and your pics of this pumpkin roll make it look so tasty. Yes, I love pumpkin pie! I don't have a recipe file box any more, but that sounds like a great gift for the girls. And I noticed the pretty dish that you laid the pumpkin roll on. You are so creative in every way, dear Jemma.

    love, ~Sheri

I used to make a chocolate log roll cake but have never tried it with pumpkin. I think I will do this sometime in the next couple of weeks.

  11. I'm giving a big smile because years ago -- not long after I started blogging -- I did a pumpkin roll tutorial on The Marmelade Gypsy (I'll put the link in so you can look and grin!). I used to make these for an annual sale -- five dozen of them, plus special orders. I never wanted to see one again. Then today I was talking with a friend and her daughter wanted to start, so I just dug out the tutorial link and sent it to her. I'll send yours, too! I'm actually ready to make them again -- I think I burned out on them. But they're delicious! And you did great photos! http://themarmeladegypsy.blogspot.com/2008/11/damn-pumpkin-rolls.html

  12. Jemma,
Not only does your Pumpkin roll look delicious, its a welcome twist on a Pumpkin dessert. It's true your photography of your dessert is gorgeous. I am always creating in the kitchen and I love to cook. One post in late Spring I invited people for a reveal of our kitchen remodel and a Tuscan meal. Well photographing food is difficult. I did manage to capture the food well - but it took tons of patience, moving quickly and using the best lighting which strangely turned out to be late afternoon that worked best for me. To think I was even considering adding a food blog in addition to my blog (I've decided not to). Unless I develop tons of patience and major time on my hands, lol.
I am going to try your recipe on Friday and serve it to our company on Saturday I remember many years ago when Jelly rolls were popular. I've always loved them.
    xo,
    Vera

  17. A very pretty pumpkin roll, and I'm sure very tasty too - for those who like pumpkin. No, I am not part of that group, but your sweet looks scrumptious, Jemma and perhaps if I were to be in its presence, I would probably give it a try, especially as it is so beautifully presented on that charming tray.

Happy Thursday from a cold, dark and rainy Toronto!

  19. This pumpkin roll looks absolutely delicious. I love pumpkin pie...heck, pumpkin anything! I'm not eating white sugar right now though and I can't have flour, so I will have to pass this up (for now). I am going to Pin to save for in the future! I love recipe boxes, but I only have one - I found it at an antique store and couldn't pass it up because the colors (mainly red) and design are so pretty. Speaking of pretty, I love the plate that your pumpkin roll is on. Could you please tell me who it is made by?
